The Silicon Valley Developmental Support Network stands today, built upon the commitment and community established by the original Silicon Valley Down Syndrome Network (SVDSN). This page is dedicated to honoring the mission, impact, and families that defined the organization for decades.

Our Founding Roots

The original SVDSN began in the 1990s as a small, informal support group called Parents of People with Down Syndrome (PODS). It was born out of a simple, crucial need: to ensure no family walked the journey of a Down syndrome diagnosis alone. What started as informal gatherings and workshops quickly evolved into a powerful, registered nonprofit organization.

SVDSN was a proud affiliate of the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS). Our primary commitment was to families throughout the Bay Area, East Bay, and Peninsula.

Core Mission & Community Impact

The central goal of SVDSN was to provide a robust community of support for individuals with Down syndrome and their families. This included:

  • New Parent Support: Reaching out to support new and expectant families immediately upon diagnosis.
  • Community Education: Working to educate the community at large to promote acceptance and inclusion.
  • Ongoing Family Support: Organizing monthly family dinners, educational workshops, and specialized training.

Signature Programs and Initiatives

SVDSN was known for creating inclusive and high-impact programs, often supported by our dedicated community partners:

  • The Buddy Walk®: The annual Buddy Walk served as the organization’s major fundraiser and most visible community event, raising awareness and celebrating individuals with Down syndrome.
  • Targeted Subsidies: The network provided financial support to members for specialized activities, including music therapy, yoga, and educational conference scholarships.
  • Inclusive Activities: Programs like the Taiko drumming group and other social events were organized to ensure children and adults with Down syndrome could participate fully alongside their peers and siblings.
  • The Congratulations Project: An integral outreach effort designed to reach new families and provide celebratory support and resources upon diagnosis.

Honoring Our Heritage

The SVDSN was, at its heart, a family-driven network. The profound success stories, the lifelong connections forged, and the tireless advocacy work carried out by its members have profoundly shaped the landscape of developmental support in Northern California.

The Silicon Valley Developmental Support Network now builds upon this incredible foundation, expanding the strategic resources and insights created here to serve the broader neurodivergent community while forever honoring the trailblazing spirit and legacy of the original SVDSN.
